Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney arrived in India on Friday for a high-profile visit aimed at diversifying trade partnerships amid ongoing tensions with the United States. The trip underscores Ottawa’s ambition to expand non-US trade, strengthen bilateral ties with the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Carney touched down in Mumbai, India’s financial hub, where he is set to address business leaders before meeting Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday. Key topics include trade, energy, technology, artificial intelligence, and defence cooperation.

India’s foreign ministry called the visit a “significant step” in strengthening bilateral ties. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the partnership is “anchored in shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, expanding cooperation across diverse sectors.”

The visit follows mounting friction with US Minister, Anita Anand noted that concerns over transnational repression will remain “at the forefront” of discussions in New Delhi.

Following India, Carney is scheduled to visit Australia to address parliament, discuss military, trade, and defence links. On his return to Ottawa, he will meet Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi to explore opportunities in automotive, energy, and critical minerals sectors.

The trip reflects Canada’s strategic push to diversify its economic partnerships while navigating complex geopolitical tensions.
