A 38 year old Nigerian, Oghenemaro Ejerua, has been arrested by the Toronto Police Service in Canada for allegedly assaulting vulnerable adults while working as a caregiver in the Sibley Avenue and Dentonia Park Avenue area of Toronto.

According to a statement released by the Toronto Police Service, Ejerua was arrested after he was declared wanted in December 2025 following reports of assaults at a group home where he was employed.

Police said Ejerua worked as a caregiver at the facility between November 1 and November 30, 2025, and allegedly carried out a series of assaults on residents during that period.

The statement said officers responded to a call on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at about 9 am, reporting an assault in the area, which led to investigations that identified Ejerua as the suspect.

After he was declared wanted, a manhunt was launched, leading to his eventual arrest by the police.

Toronto Police confirmed that Ejerua has been charged with seven counts of assault.

“Oghenemaro Dave Ejerua, 38, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with seven counts of assault. He was scheduled to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 10 am, in room 106,” the police said.

The case has renewed concerns about the safety of vulnerable adults in care facilities and the need for strict background checks and monitoring of caregivers.

Ejerua is not the first Nigerian to face criminal charges in Canada in recent times.

Earlier, Toronto Police arrested another Nigerian, Babatunde Afuwape, in connection with the killing of a 20 year old university student, Shivank Avasthi, in an incident that occurred on December 23, 2025.

Police said Afuwape was charged with murder in relation to the case and is currently facing trial in Canada.
