The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from 24 to 28 teams, in a move aimed at broadening participation across the continent.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe made the disclosure on Sunday during a press conference following an executive committee meeting, describing the decision as part of efforts to enhance the quality and inclusiveness of African football.
“We are committed to world-class football with the best African players from all over the world returning to compete on the continent,” Motsepe said.
While the expansion signals a significant shift for Africa’s flagship football tournament, the CAF boss did not provide details on the new competition format or when the change would take effect.
AFCON was last expanded in 2019 from 16 to 24 teams, a structure that has been used in the last four editions of the tournament.
Motsepe also confirmed that the 2027 AFCON will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as scheduled. He added that another edition will take place in 2028, after which the tournament is expected to revert to a four-year cycle.
In addition, CAF is planning to introduce a Nations League competition in 2029. The new tournament will feature 16 teams and will be held every two years.

Speaking on CAF’s broader football development strategy, Motsepe emphasised the need for consistency in scheduling and investment in emerging regions.
“We have to stop this thing of African fixtures not being predictable, consistent and reliable. We must develop football in East Africa, which is an area of much potential,” he said.

The expansion of AFCON is seen as part of CAF’s ongoing efforts to increase competitiveness, provide more opportunities for emerging teams, and strengthen the global profile of African football.
