Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Senegalese referee, Issa Sy to officiate today’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria in Morocco.
CAF had earlier named Omar Artan to handle the encounter but withdrew the appointment amid rising concerns over officiating decisions at the ongoing tournament.
Issa Sy is not new to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, having previously served as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the group-stage match between Morocco and Tanzania.
The latest appointment is expected to ease tensions ahead of the high-stakes encounter, as both sides battle for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured their quarter-final spot with an emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique, while Algeria edged DR Congo 1–0 after extra time to advance.
Saturday’s match will be a repeat of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, which Algeria won 2–1, courtesy of a dramatic late free-kick by Riyad Mahrez.
The quarter-final showdown is scheduled to kick off at 5p.m. Nigerian time.
