Notorious Mexican drug kingpin, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, has been killed in a military operation, bringing to a dramatic end years of violent dominance and a relentless international manhunt.

Oseguera, 60, was the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel, popularly called CJNG, a powerful criminal syndicate that rose to rival the notorious Sinaloa Cartel.

Authorities say that he died after sustaining injuries during a fierce security raid. His death follows years of evading capture despite a 15 million dollar bounty placed on him by United States authorities.

A former police officer turned crime boss, El Mencho built CJNG into a global trafficking network accused of smuggling large quantities of narcotics, including fentanyl, into the United States. The cartel’s operations expanded beyond drug trafficking into fuel theft, extortion and other organized criminal activities.

Security expert, Vanda Felbab-Brown of the Brookings Institution described Oseguera as one of the most sought after figures in the global fight against narcotics, noting that his ability to remain at large for years underscored the sophistication of his network.

Unlike imprisoned drug lord, Joaquin Guzman, El Mencho largely avoided the spotlight, preferring to operate behind the scenes while consolidating power through intimidation and strategic alliances.

Organized crime analyst, Edgardo Buscaglia of Columbia University noted that the cartel also cultivated influence in communities, at times providing relief materials during crises to build local support.

Security observers warn that his death could trigger fresh rivalries within CJNG, spark renewed instability in regions where the cartel maintains strong influence.

With the fall of El Mencho, attention now turns to whether Mexican authorities can capitalize on the development to weaken the cartel’s structure or a new power struggle will emerge in the country’s long running battle against organized crime.
