The Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri is currently facing a shortage of blood following the influx of civilian casualties from a recent military airstrike incident in Gubio Local Government Area of the state.

The development comes after reports that no fewer than 30 people were feared killed when a military air operation reportedly struck a weekly market in Jilli village, along the border between Borno and Yobe states, on Saturday evening. The incident caused panic as explosions rocked the busy trading centre, affecting traders and residents in the area.

The strikes, carried out on April 11, 2026, were conducted by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI in coordination with the Nigerian Army as part of ongoing operations targeting terrorist positions in the North East.

At the hospital, the Medical Director confirmed that 21 injured persons had so far been received, comprising 16 males and five females, with varying degrees of injuries.

“Today, we received about 21 victims of bomb blast injuries and gunshot wounds from the town between Gubio and Geidam. Most of them sustained different levels of injuries ranging from mild to severe cases. Some of the severe cases require surgery and have already begun receiving treatment,” he said.

He added that while medical supplies and emergency care were available, the hospital was in urgent need of blood donations to manage critical cases.

“So far, everything needed for treatment is available, and patients have received first aid. However, some require blood transfusions before and during surgery. We are calling on the public to come forward and donate blood. Blood remains our most critical need at this time,” he said.

The medical director further noted that additional casualties may still be brought in as assessments continue.

The hospital has classified the injured patients into mild, moderate, and severe cases, with medical personnel working round the clock to stabilize those in critical condition.

Authorities have urged residents within and outside Maiduguri to support emergency blood donation efforts to help save lives.
