Former United States President, Bill Clinton has told lawmakers he “did nothing wrong” in his association with late financier Jeffrey Epstein, as he testified before the House of Representatives Oversight Committee in a closed door deposition.
According to reports by Reuters and The Associated Press, Clinton stated in a prepared submission that he “saw nothing that gave him pause” during the period he spent time with Epstein in the early 2000s.
Clinton acknowledged flying several times on Epstein’s private plane after leaving office but said he would not have done so if he was aware of allegations of sex trafficking involving underage girls. He added that he would have reported any such misconduct to authorities if he had known.
“We are only here because he hid it from everyone so well for so long,” Clinton told the committee.
His testimony came a day after his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, also appeared before the same panel. The deposition was held near the Clintons’ residence in Westchester County, New York.
The committee’s Republican chairman, Representative James Comer, said lawmakers would question the former president about photographs released by the Department of Justice that reportedly show him with women whose identities were redacted. The panel is also examining Epstein’s alleged links to the Clintons’ charitable foundation.
Clinton maintained that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal conduct prior to his 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
The inquiry has intensified partisan tensions in Washington. Both Bill and Hillary Clinton have accused Republicans of using the investigation as a political exercise, arguing that other individuals connected to Epstein were permitted to submit written statements rather than appear in person.
Democratic lawmakers have called on President Donald Trump to also testify, noting that his name appears in Epstein related documents. Trump has previously acknowledged socializing with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s but said he cut ties before Epstein’s conviction.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said he was not pleased to see Clinton being deposed but declined further comment on the matter.
The House Oversight Committee has indicated that video of Hillary Clinton’s testimony could be released in the coming days as the investigation continues.
