Following the spike in the prevailing security challenges bedeviling Nigeria, the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Miller Dantawaye, has cautioned residents of Abuja to be careful with motorcyclists especially dispatch riders, that officially are supposed to be dispatching goods from one point to another within the nation’s capital city.
He disclosed that the Police have noticed that some of them are criminally minded while carrying out their activities, adding that some are already in Police custody.
He spoke Wednesday while briefing journalists after an expanded FCT Security meeting presided over by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.
He said: ” We’ve had cases where we’ve met them in suspicious situations. When you talk to them and you conduct search, you see one or two folks in possession of stolen items and prohibited drugs and other illicit substances.
“You tell them to open the phone and they cannot open it. And then one or two calls come and the real owner, you pick and tell them to send down the real owner to a particular location. And he just comes and puts his passport on it and opens it. So we have some of them in custody.
“What I keep saying is we will continue to carry out our operations and investigations from the known to the unknown.
“So, if that case has happened, we have started to expand those people intended to sell the phones to. They will tell us what time and we will round them up by the grace of God.
“We are activating a lot of technical intelligence to deal with such crimes from the wantons to the dispatch riders and all.”
Furthermore, the FCT Police Boss revealed that the security agencies have agreed to continue to give relevant agencies that are legally empowered to demolish shanties in Abuja.
According to him, the FCT minister has vowed to make sure that there is proper approval for removal of shanties in the FCT.
“We will give them support to demolish those shanties as long as it is authorized by the law.
“So, the FCT Minister has assured that any shanty that is domiciled in the FCT, the requisite legal backing should be gotten to demolish them. He has asked us to mention this because, we, the security agencies, will give support as long as it is legally approved.
“We beg FCT residents to be assured of our presence and be assured that we will be paid with your hard-earned money to secure you and that we will not relent.
“Please, when you hear anything about kidnapping anywhere, let’s try to verify, check those information before we create unnecessary pandemonium or confusion around the city center”, he stated.
