Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on youths across the state to remain vigilant and actively safeguard public infrastructure within their communities.
The Governor made the appeal during an Easter gathering with youth leaders from the 64 villages in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, held at his hometown, Ikot Ekpene Udo.
He emphasized the important role young people must play in ensuring government facilities and investments are protected for the benefit of all residents.
Governor Eno expressed concern over the increasing cases of vandalism affecting public infrastructure – such as electricity transformers, power installations, school facilities. He urged the youths of Nsit Ubium to set a strong example by taking responsibility for protecting government property and helping to maintain peace and security in their various communities.
The Governor also revealed that the state government is considering a new law that would hold community leaders accountable if public assets in their areas are not adequately protected. According to him, the proposed measure may include sanctions such as the withdrawal of official recognition, certificates, or appointments from village heads and youth leaders who fail in their duties.
In addition, Governor Eno encouraged the youths to support the ongoing registration of women’s cooperatives across the state. He explained that the initiative is designed to empower rural women and boost economic growth at the grassroots level.
As the political season approaches, the Governor advised the youths to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing the importance of peaceful participation in democratic processes.
Responding on behalf of the youth leaders, representatives from the villages thanked the Governor for the opportunity to engage directly with them and commended his leadership.
They also expressed appreciation for the ongoing infrastructural projects in the area, pledged continued support for his administration.
