At least 30 villagers were killed, scores abducted after armed men, suspected to be bandits operating from Kainji Lake National Park, attacked Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, Kabe District, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.
The raid reportedly took place on Saturday, with assailants setting the market ablaze, looting food items and wares, and shooting at villagers. Many victims were allegedly abducted along routes leading into the surrounding forest.
Niger State Police Command confirmed the attack.
Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun said a joint security team had visited the scene, rescue operations for the kidnapped individuals are ongoing.
“Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, some persons were also kidnapped,” Abiodun told newsmen.
