Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government over the new tax reform laws and the arraignment of his Commissioner for Finance by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged 9.7 million dollar terrorism financing charge.
The Governor expressed outrage over what he described as an attempt to link his administration to terrorism, saying he woke up to accusations that mentioned his name despite his constitutional immunity as a sitting Governor. He confirmed that his Commissioner for Finance is currently being detained by the EFCC in connection with the case.
Bala Mohammed accused the Federal Government of neglecting Bauchi State, insisting that no meaningful federal projects have been executed in the state. He said the Federal Government has not constructed even one kilometre of road nor provided water projects, adding that the state government bears the cost of supporting security agencies operating within Bauchi.
According to the governor, he has remained silent for too long but could no longer tolerate what he described as intimidation and harassment. He criticized the Federal Government’s tax reforms, arguing that despite obvious flaws, the policies are being implemented in a way that will further impoverish ordinary Nigerians, weaken state governments.
The Governor further alleged that the ruling party at the centre is using the courts and the EFCC to persecute and prosecute Nigerians who are not members of the All Progressives Congress. He warned that continued use of state institutions for political purposes could escalate political tension across the country.
Bala Mohammed said he would not allow anyone to criminalize him because he is not a member of the APC and has refused to join the party. He stated clearly that he would not defect to the ruling party, warning that persistent persecution could lead to serious political confrontation.
As of the time of this report, neither the EFCC nor the Federal Government have issued an official response to the Governor’s allegations.
