Four Points by Sheraton in Ikot Ekpene came alive on Saturday as the African Women in Leadership Organisation AWLO marked its 16th anniversary with an induction ceremony, end of year lecture, a partners awards dinner.
One of the defining moments of the event was the presentation of the HeForShe Champion of the Year Award to Akparawa Idorenyin Raphael – Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Market Matters.
The award was given in recognition of his steady support for gender inclusion, women empowerment especially within market communities, where women play a central role in local trade and economic growth. His engagement with market leaders and grassroot stakeholders has continued to reflect a leadership style, built on inclusion, understanding, direct support.
AWLO, a pan African Organization, focused on promoting women leadership and fair representation across sectors explained that the HeForShe award is reserved for men who consistently support women, not just through words but through actions, policies, sustained engagements.
The anniversary programme also saw the induction of new members into the organization alongside an end of year lecture that focused on leadership, sustainable development. Partners who have supported AWLO’s vision and work across Africa were also recognised during the ceremony.

The event drew participants from government, civil society, private sector, development organizations highlighting AWLO’s growing presence, influence in shaping conversations around inclusive leadership on the continent.
In his remarks after receiving the award; Akparawa Idorenyin Raphael expressed gratitude for the honour, reaffirmed his commitment towards supporting women, creating opportunities for their growth. He also called on men to take active roles in supporting women, contributing to their progress at all levels.
The celebration is expected to conclude with a thanksgiving service as AWLO reflects on 16 years of work impact and progress while setting its focus on building stronger support for women leadership across Africa.
