Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has announced that his government will support any proposal by the United Kingdom to remove Prince Andrew from the line of succession to the British throne.

Albanese disclosed on Tuesday that Australia would formally notify other Commonwealth realms of its position, stating that Canberra would agree to any move initiated by the UK government concerning the Duke of York’s removal.

The development comes amid renewed scrutiny over Prince Andrew’s past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The former royalty has reportedly been questioned as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct in public office. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Albanese said any amendment to the order of succession must be initiated by the UK and would require the consent of the 14 other Commonwealth nations that recognise King Charles III as head of state.

In neighbouring New Zealand, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also indicated support for such a move if formally proposed by London. Luxon stated that no individual is above the law and that his government would back the UK’s decision once investigations are concluded.

Officials in the UK have maintained that any decision regarding changes to the line of succession would follow the outcome of the police investigation. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government would not comment further while inquiries are ongoing.

Prince Andrew, currently eighth in line to the throne, is stripped of his royal titles following public controversy surrounding his ties to Epstein. Authorities have yet to announce any formal charges in connection with the latest investigation.
