Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed deep concern over recent deadly attacks in Adamawa State that claimed more than 20 lives.
The attacks, which occurred in Madagali and Hong Local Government Areas, highlight the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria’s North-East region. Atiku, speaking on his official X account on Friday, described the incidents as tragic and urged swift action from authorities.
“I am deeply moved by the tragic attacks in Adamawa State, where gunmen killed over 20 people in a market in Madagali and Hong local government areas,” Atiku stated.
He added that the attacks “not only highlight the worsening insecurity in the country but also deepen the North-East crisis.”
The former Vice President called on security agencies to redouble efforts to bring perpetrators to justice and strengthen protection for communities to prevent future attacks.
Adamawa State has long been on the frontline of Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, with civilians, markets, and schools frequently targeted by Boko Haram and splinter groups exploiting porous borders and weak security infrastructure.
Experts warn that without sustained intervention, attacks on villages and markets could escalate, further destabilising the North-East and disrupting lives and livelihoods across the region, including neighbouring Borno, Yobe, and Taraba states.
Atiku’s call comes amid ongoing discussions on improving intelligence gathering, expanding community policing, and ensuring the military and paramilitary forces have adequate resources to secure vulnerable areas.
