Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Ndaudoh Ndaeyo, has expressed concern over persistent land encroachment on the institution’s property, revealing that personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Police had to sleep in the bush for days to secure parts of the university land during perimeter fencing.

Prof. Ndaeyo disclosed this in Uyo during a live media chat on the theme “Professor Ndaeyo’s Administration: Fallacies or Fact.”

Appointed in 2020 as the eighth substantive Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ndaeyo is set to exit office on December 1, 2025.

He thanked TETFund for releasing funds for perimeter fencing, but noted that the project faced strong resistance from some host communities driven by personal interests.

According to him, despite the stiff opposition and damaged sections of the fence, the university has now secured Certificates of Occupancy for all its campuses, a development he described as a major breakthrough in ending recurring land disputes.

“Truly, 50 per cent of our challenge has been land encroachment. Encroachment has forced me and many others in and out of court,” he said. We appealed to TETFund for funds to start fencing, and they approved. But I must emphasise that erecting the fence has been a herculean task. We had to deploy police and army personnel who slept in the bush just to fence a small portion of the land.” Prof. Ndaeyo said.

He added that with the Certificates of Occupancy, the university can now “show clearly where our land begins and ends,” leading to the resolution of several claims by individuals and communities.

On allegations of collecting cash for student admissions, Prof. Ndaeyo emphatically denied involvement, stating that he had “never received money for granting admission.”

He, however, lamented that some individuals exploited his goodwill to extort unsuspecting applicants, insisting such funds did not reach him.

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted key achievements of his administration, including allocation of N1 billion for commercial farming development; establishment of a CNG plant and solar power generation facility; creation of seven new faculties, bringing the total to 19; improved electricity supply across the university; and enhanced staff welfare.

“For professional cadres, I promoted 566 staff members in a single day, including 214 full professors, 252 associate professors, and 35 deputy directors. Prof. Ndaeyo stated.
