Grace, sacrifice and legacy were at the forefront as the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) hosted a memorable International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 celebration in Abuja.
The event, held on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Mrs Alero Azazi Event Centre, was themed “Give to Gain: An Evening of Grace and Legacy.”
It brought together military women, veterans, widows and families in a show of unity, recognition and appreciation.
In her keynote address, the President of NAOWA, Dr Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, described the gathering as a tribute to women who have shown resilience, made sacrifices and built enduring legacies within the military community.
She highlighted the significance of the all-white dress code, noting that it symbolised peace, dignity and the quiet strength that defines the women being celebrated.
Dr Shaibu paid tribute to the founding mothers of the association, past leaders and retired officers’ wives, acknowledging their pivotal roles in shaping NAOWA and sustaining its values over the years.
She noted that their sacrifices, though often unnoticed, continue to impact generations within the military family.
A major highlight of the evening was the recognition of widows of fallen heroes and female veterans.
The NAOWA President commended their courage and resilience, stating that their contributions remain indelible in the nation’s history.
She also encouraged younger military wives to remain steadfast and confident, reminding them that every accomplished woman’s journey is shaped by perseverance and growth.
The collaboration between NAOWA and DEPOWA was widely praised as a reflection of shared commitment to promoting the welfare and recognition of military women.
Dr Shaibu commended the President of DEPOWA, Mrs Mernan Femi Oluyede, for her partnership in organising the event.
Mrs Oluyede was represented at the occasion by Mrs Osas Edosa.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former DEPOWA Presidents, Hajiya Malama Fatima Ogohi and Mrs Victoria Anwuli Irabor, as well as former NAOWA Presidents, Mrs Martha Inwade Bamaiyi, Mrs Esther Malu and Mrs Nnenna Gift Ihejirika.
Also present were the wife of a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Mrs Fatima Wali Abdulrahman, retired senior officers, wives of fallen heroes, and members of NAOWA and other military groups.
Activities at the event included goodwill messages, interactive sessions, words of encouragement from senior officers’ wives, award presentations and group photographs, all underscoring the spirit of unity and celebration of womanhood.
