The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that armed attackers targeted the residence of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral, Sokoto State.
The 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, described the report as false and misleading, urging members of the public to disregard the claims.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Olaniyi Osoba, the Army said there was no attack on Bishop Kukah’s residence or the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral.
According to the statement, the attention of the Division was drawn to a misleading Facebook post alleging that armed men had attacked the residence of the Bishop of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese as well as the cathedral.
Osoba clarified that the report is entirely unfounded, emphasizing that the safety and security of Bishop Matthew Kukah and the Sokoto Catholic Cathedral remain intact.
He further noted that Bishop Kukah is currently carrying out his Easter duties without any disruption, contrary to the claims circulating online.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state, noting that 8 Division Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains steadfast in ensuring the safety and security of all residents in Sokoto State and across its area of responsibility.
The statement added that robust security measures have been put in place to guarantee a peaceful and secure Easter celebration throughout the Division’s operational area.
The Army also urged the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing, warning that the spread of false information could create unnecessary panic among residents.
