The much-anticipated 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival has officially commenced at the historic Mata Fada arena in Argungu, Kebbi State, drawing thousands of fishermen, tourists, cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.
Excitement reached a peak on Saturday when a large number of the expected 40,000 fishermen surged into the river shortly after noon, ahead of the formal opening ceremony and the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Security operatives were temporarily overwhelmed as participants wielded their traditional fishing tools in a dramatic display of skill, strength, and endurance.
Dating back to 1934, the Argungu Fishing Festival was originally introduced to mark peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom.
Over the years, it has evolved into an international cultural spectacle, featuring fishing competitions, traditional music and dance, wrestling, arts and crafts, while promoting tourism and local commerce.
The festival is widely celebrated as a symbol of unity, cultural pride, and economic opportunity.
Authorities later regained control of the situation, ensuring safety and order as the festivities continue.
This year’s edition promises high-profile dignitaries, cultural performances, and enhanced security measures to manage the enthusiastic crowds.
