A tragic incident occurred on Sunday at Fegge in Onitsha, Anambra State, when an 18-year-old apprentice allegedly killed his master during an altercation.
The suspect, identified as Chiemerie, reportedly attacked his boss, known simply as Iyke, with a kitchen pestle after being scolded over alleged pilfering, drug use, and irresponsible behaviour.
Eyewitnesses said the victim, a trader at the popular Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Medicine Market, was struck on the head and rushed to a hospital, but he later died from his injuries.
Speaking on Monday, the Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said the suspect has been arrested, with the pestle used in the attack recovered.
“The boss scolded the suspect for his behaviour of pilfering money in the shop, taking drugs, and coming back late at night. It resulted in an altercation that escalated, leading the suspect to use a pestle from the kitchen to hit his boss on the head,” SP Ikenga stated.
The incident has shocked residents in the area, drawing attention to the risks of unchecked apprentice-master relationships.
In a similar case in 2023, the Ondo State Police Command arrested a 20-year-old apprentice for allegedly murdering his master, Saviour Joseph, and disposing of the body in a well.
