The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has formally rejected the impeachment process reportedly being initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy by the Rivers State House of Assembly, warning that the move could destabilize governance in the state.

In a press statement issued on Thursday by the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC said its attention had been drawn to “the unfortunate developments” from the Assembly, stressing that while the legislature remains an independent arm of government, impeachment should not be deployed as a tool for political brinkmanship.

The party acknowledged the constitutional role of the legislature in providing checks and balances but maintained that resorting to impeachment at this time was unacceptable.

“Our position as at today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement said.

The APC cautioned against what it described as the resurfacing of unresolved internal conflicts from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that such disputes should not be imported into the APC to undermine its government in Rivers State.

Addressing claims that the impeachment threat was linked to budgetary issues, the party recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a one-year budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President and Commander-in-Chief in May 2025.

The budget, it noted, was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.

According to the APC, the approved budget is expected to run until August 2026, adding that the Governor is not under any constitutional obligation to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with the existing appropriation.

The party further noted that the constitution permits a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year by a state governor.

The Rivers APC urged members of the State House of Assembly, particularly those elected on the party’s platform, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government led by Governor Fubara.

“We strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC members, to resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilise the Government of Rivers State,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its commitment to party unity and stable governance, the APC warned that it would not tolerate actions capable of undermining the image of the party or slowing the pace of development in the state.

“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements,” Nwauju stated.

The party called for the immediate discontinuation of the impeachment process, cautioning that it could drag the APC’s image into disrepute, hinder ongoing development efforts in Rivers State.

“Let our state remain a democracy, not a politicocracy,” the statement added.
