All Progressives Congress (APC) flags were on Monday hoisted at the Kano State Government House, signalling the formal return of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party.

The development comes days after the Governor announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), ending months of political realignments and speculation over his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Yusuf, who is expected to formally register as an APC member on Monday, will be joined by key political stakeholders across the state.

According to party sources, 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen are also set to defect to the APC.

Yusuf was a founding figure in the NNPP’s victory in the 2023 governorship election in Kano but cited governance realities and the need for stronger collaboration with the Federal Government as reasons for his return to the APC.

The Governor previously belonged to the APC between 2014 and 2018 before defecting to other political platforms.

Preparations are ongoing for his official reception, with the national leader of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, expected to return from London on Monday to formally receive the governor in Kano.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa; Yusuf’s decision was described as being informed by prevailing realities of governance, national cohesion and development.

The statement added that the Governor would also officially flag off the APC electronic registration exercise in Kano State on Monday, marking a new phase of political alignment in the state.
