The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Chibuike Anikpe, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu, 35, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday in Awka by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga.
Ikenga said the suspect was arrested on January 7 by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka.
He dismissed as false rumours circulating on social media that the killing was carried out by individuals to whom the suspect was indebted.
According to the police, the suspect confessed during interrogation that he stabbed the victim, an act that resulted in her death.
The incident reportedly occurred on December 9, 2025.
Ikenga said the suspect claimed he acted out of suspicion of infidelity.
He added that the suspect also alleged that his significant financial investment in the victim left him bankrupt and emotionally distressed, circumstances he said contributed to the incident.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the suspect admitted to dropping a fake letter claiming he had been kidnapped by creditors, allegedly in an attempt to divert suspicion after the incident.
As part of ongoing investigations, Ikenga said detectives have visited the morgue where the victim’s body was deposited.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community and renewed discussions around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes.
“The Command urges members of the public to adopt lawful and peaceful means in resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies,” Ikenga said.
He added that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
