The Anambra State Government has suspended the Headteachers of nine state-owned primary and secondary schools for two weeks following reports of low attendance of pupils and students on Monday.

The suspension was announced by the Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr Vera Nwadinobi, during an assessment visit to the affected schools to monitor attendance and compliance with the state government’s directive against Monday sit-at-home.

Dr Nwadinobi expressed displeasure over the poor turnout of pupils and students in the schools visited, despite the presence of teachers.

She explained that the exercise was part of ongoing monitoring activities across the state to ensure adherence to the Executive Order abolishing the closure of schools on Mondays.

According to findings during the visit, some of the schools had no pupils or students in attendance, while others recorded between two and five pupils.

At Union Primary School, Ukpo, in Dunukofia Local Government Area (LGA), only three pupils were present, while no student was found at Walter Eze Secondary School, Ukpo, also in Dunukofia LGA.

Similarly, Aguoji Primary School, Ifitedunu, recorded five pupils, while Hilltop Primary School, Ifitedunu, had only three pupils present. At Chukwurah Primary School, Abatete, in Idemili North LGA, no pupil was found during the visit.

Speaking on the development, Dr Nwadinobi said Governor Chukwuma Soludo had approved the suspension of the headteachers of the affected schools following the outcome of the assessment.

“Following the findings, Mr Governor has approved the suspension of the headteachers of the affected schools for two weeks,” she said.

She added that the affected headteachers had been directed to immediately hand over to the next most senior officers in their schools to ensure uninterrupted administration.

According to her, the action underscores the state government’s zero tolerance for negligence and its firm commitment to restoring discipline, accountability, and full academic engagement in public schools.

The Anambra State Government had earlier issued an Executive Order abolishing the practice of closing schools on Mondays due to sit-at-home directives.

The government warned that any teacher or non-tutorial staff who fails to comply would either receive only 20 per cent of their salary or forfeit it entirely.
