Anambra State Government has directed all categories of schools in the state to ensure full resumption of academic activities every Monday, warning that any school that fails to comply will be shut down immediately.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Awka.
She said a circular conveying the directive has already been issued to school authorities across the state.
“The order, given at the instance of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, applies to all public, private, mission and returned schools across Anambra State,” Chuma-Udeh said.
“Any school that fails to resume activities on Mondays will face immediate closure.”
The directive follows the state government’s ongoing efforts to end the Monday sit-at-home practice, which had led to the closure of schools, markets and businesses across the state. The sit-at-home was initially declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in protest against the detention of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The Soludo administration has maintained that the continued closure of schools on Mondays has negatively affected academic activities and the overall development of the state.
Anambra State Government recently issued an Executive Order abolishing the closure of schools on Mondays, warning that any teacher or non-tutorial staff who fails to comply would either receive 20 per cent of their salary or total forfeiture.
