AKWA IBOM PUSHES FOR STRONGER FINANCIAL CONTROL THROUGH FULL TSA IMPLEMENTATION

The Akwa Ibom State Government has renewed efforts to fully implement the Treasury Single Account TSA across all Ministries, Departments and Agencies in a bid to improve financial discipline, accountability.

Speaking on Friday at a one day sensitisation programme on the TSA, the State Commissioner for Finance Mr Emem Almond Bob said Akwa Ibom must not fall behind accepted standards in public finance management. He explained that the move follows a directive by Governor Umo Eno aimed at strengthening the state’s revenue management system.

Bob revealed that Akwa Ibom did not meet the required TSA benchmark in the 2024 Public Financial Management Assessment Report. He also disclosed that findings by the State Fiscal Responsibility Board showed that a large portion of the state’s Internally Generated Revenue was not being paid into the State Consolidated Revenue Account.

According to him, the full implementation of the TSA has become necessary to correct the situation, improve oversight of public funds.

“The Treasury Single Account is a system that brings all government funds into one account, ensuring proper control and use of revenue,” the Commissioner said.

He added that the TSA would help improve transparency, ensure better cash control, make funds readily available, reduce borrowing costs and close gaps that allow revenue losses.

In his presentation, the Commissioner for Science and Digital Economy Dr Frank Ekpeyong announced that the TSA payment platform known as Akwaremit would be launched in January. He said the platform would serve as a secure channel for the remittance of all government revenues.

Ekpeyong explained that Akwaremit would help reduce leakages, improve revenue tracking support MDAs with simple digital tools and strengthen the use of technology in government operations. He called on all MDAs to comply fully with the Governor’s directive.

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service Mr Okon Okon, the State Accountant General Pastor Uwem Andrew pledged their support for the full rollout of the TSA.

The programme featured a question-and-answer session – where participants sought clarification on the TSA process, received responses from the Commissioners for Finance and for Science and Digital Economy.

Those present at the event included the Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources Rt Honourable Nsikak Ekong the Commissioner for Housing Rt Honourable Henry Archibong the Commissioner for Health Dr Ekem Emmanuel the Special Adviser to the Governor on Cooperatives and Rural Development Permanent Secretaries Directors Account Officers of relevant MDAs representatives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Policy Alert and other invited participants.
