Akwa Ibom State Government has approved the appointment of Dr. Akanimo Jonah as the Acting Rector of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua.
The appointment was formalized during a brief handover ceremony on Thursday, where outgoing Rector, Dr. Moses Umobong, handed over leadership to his deputy, Dr. Jonah, following directives from the institution’s visitor, Governor Umo Eno.
“I have been authorised to hand over to the Deputy Rector, Dr. Akanimo Jonah. My wish and desire is that we all join hands with him to continue steering the institution pending the appointment of a substantive Rector,” Dr. Umobong said.
He also expressed confidence that Dr. Jonah would successfully deliver on the objectives of the institution.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Jonah described the appointment as a significant milestone in his career and pledged loyalty to Governor Umo Eno and expressed support for the ARISE Agenda, which he said had begun reshaping the state’s education sector.
Dr. Jonah urged staff and students to actively support the administration’s reforms, aimed at strengthening the polytechnic and expanding opportunities for young people.
He also thanked his predecessor for seven years of dedicated service characterized by discipline, innovation, and steady growth.
Highlighting the collective effort that elevated the institution to its current standing among the country’s top polytechnics, Dr. Jonah called for unity among academic and non-academic staff during the transition period.
He emphasized the need for cooperation, patience, and renewed commitment to academic excellence.

The Acting Rector further outlined his priorities, including improving learning facilities, enhancing discipline, expanding practical student training, and ensuring that the polytechnic remains competitive and responsive to the needs of the state.
A native of Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, Dr. Jonah holds a Doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
