Workers in Akwa Ibom State under the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), State branch, have given Governor Umo Eno a one-month ultimatum to fulfill all pending obligations to judiciary staff or face a strike.
The ultimatum, contained in a strike notice issued to the governor, highlights unpaid entitlements including the 2025 robe allowance for lawyers, promotion arrears for 2024 and 2025, salary arrears for court assessors, and the correction of discrepancies in the CONAKEJUSS progressive salary table.
The notice followed the Union’s congress held on January 30, 2026, at the Justice Idiong Multipurpose Hall, Judiciary Headquarters, Uyo, which drew members from the Executive Committee and representatives from the state’s 16 judicial divisions. The congress was presided over by the Branch Chairman, Comrade Katele Ajah.
While commending Governor Eno for approving a 15 per cent increase in peculiar allowance for judiciary staff and the ₦1.5 million refreshment package during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration, the union expressed displeasure over the non-implementation of the 15 per cent arrears effective from April 2025.
The Union also acknowledged the Governor’s allocation of 1,000 employment slots to the judiciary but described the number as inadequate to address the manpower deficit caused by retirements, deaths, and other exits since 2013. They appealed for an increase to at least 2,500 slots and prioritisation of temporary staff absorption.
In addition, the congress called for the provision of an official vehicle for the Executive Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), as well as pool vehicles for both the judiciary and the JSC. It also urged reconsideration of the unified state employment portal, citing that the policy undermines the constitutional functions of the Judicial Service Commission under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The communique reads in part:
“We call on the State Government to immediately release all outstanding entitlements due to judiciary staff within one month. These include the 2025 robe allowance for lawyers, the 2024 and 2025 promotion arrears, salary arrears for court assessors, and the prompt correction of discrepancies in the CONAKEJUSS progressive salary table.”
