Wife of the Executive Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Mokut Ukpanah, has flagged off the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week, urging mothers to take antenatal and postnatal care seriously and ensure their children receive all recommended immunizations.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Ukpanah emphasized that the Chairman of Ukanafun, Prince Uyo Ukpanah, remains firmly committed to strengthening primary healthcare delivery in the area, especially for infants and young children.
She noted that his passion for child welfare continues to drive the council’s support for health programmes targeted at vulnerable groups.

“Our mothers must understand that antenatal and postnatal care are not optional; they are life-saving practices,” she said. “I urge every woman here to protect herself and her child by accessing these services and completing all immunization schedules.”
As part of the flag-off, Mrs. Ukpanah distributed essential items including diapers, baby wipes, bathing soaps, and other kits to breastfeeding mothers, encouraging them to maintain good hygiene and proper care for their infants.

Director of Health, Mrs. Margaret Umanah, explained that MNCH Week was designed to deliver integrated, high-impact interventions such as immunization, vitamin A supplementation, deworming, health education, and growth monitoring, all aimed at improving maternal and child survival rates at the grassroots.

Also speaking, the Supervisor for Health, Mrs. Inem Esit Ido, praised the Council Chairman for consistently supporting the health sector.
