AKWA IBOM ASSEMBLY ORDERS CLAMPDOWN ON COVERED NUMBER PLATES, UNREGISTERED VEHICLES

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has directed the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, to enforce the State government’s ban on the covering of vehicle number plates and the use of unregistered vehicles across the state.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Hon. Uwem Peter Imoh-Ita, and adopted during plenary session held today, 11th November, 2025 in Uyo.

Moving the motion under Order III, Rules 1 and 2 of the House Standing Orders (7th Edition), Hon. Imoh-Ita expressed concern over the increasing number of vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks, operating without registration or visible number plates on State roads.

He warned that such unidentifiable vehicles have become a growing threat to public safety, noting that they are often involved in road crashes, property damage and hit-and-run incidents without being traceable.

“It is alarming that many construction firms and private operators now use vehicles without valid identification numbers. This not only violates traffic laws but endangers lives and property.” The Mkpat Enin representative said.

Following deliberations, the House mandated the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, to ensure that all construction companies in the State register their vehicles, especially trucks and heavy-duty equipment and display valid number plates.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Ministry of Transport were also directed to intensify surveillance and enforcement of relevant traffic and road safety regulations to ensure full compliance.

Presiding over the session, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong, commended the sponsor of the motion, describing it as timely and in line with the state government’s commitment to maintaining order and security on Akwa Ibom roads.

The Speaker further instructed the Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs. Nsikakabasi Orok, to communicate the resolution to the relevant agencies for implementation.

Meanwhile, the House adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at 10 a.m.
