The Abia State Government has raised concerns over what it described as a planned protest allegedly being sponsored by some political actors in the state, warning that such action could threaten public peace and security.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, said intelligence reports available to the government indicate that certain individuals are mobilizing miscreants from Aba and neighbouring states to stage a protest tagged “Tinubu Dey Work, Otti Dey Chop.”

According to the statement, the protest is allegedly aimed at promoting a narrative that the Federal Government funded the construction of federal roads and other infrastructure projects currently being executed by the Abia State Government.

The government maintained that it had previously clarified the issue, stating that the Federal Government had stopped refunding states for federal road projects, contrary to claims being circulated by some opposition figures.

Ekeoma further alleged that the planned protest may be intended to provoke confrontation between the protesters and members of the state’s task force in Aba, potentially leading to violence and breakdown of law and order.

The government warned that it would not tolerate any attempt to destabilise the state or endanger the lives of residents, stressing that those involved in such activities would face the full weight of the law.

While acknowledging that dissent and criticism are legitimate aspects of democracy, the state government said it would act decisively against individuals or groups that attempt to incite violence under the guise of political opposition.

The statement also urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against participating in politically sponsored protests which may expose them to legal consequences.

The Abia State Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, ensuring that the political environment in the state remains open and safe for all lawful political activities.
