Abia State Government has approved the payment of the adjusted minimum wage to staff of the State Education Management Board (SEMB) and teachers across the state.

Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Kenechukwu Nwosu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Umuahia, the state capital.

Nwosu said the approval forms part of the Otti administration’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of education workers and address outstanding salary and allowance issues in the sector.

“The government is committed to ensuring that all education personnel receive their entitlements promptly,” he said.

According to him, the state government is making steady progress in processing leave allowances for SEMB staff and teachers, while arrangements are also underway to pay teachers whose services were previously extended for five years but later discontinued due to system-related challenges.

“We are also arranging payments for teachers whose services were extended but later affected by system-related issues,” Nwosu added.

He commended Governor Otti for prioritizing the education sector and for demonstrating consistent commitment to the welfare of teachers and other education personnel in Abia State.

The Abia State Government had, in 2023, approved the implementation of the revised minimum wage in line with the federal directive.

However, delays in salary and allowance processing had affected some SEMB staff and teachers, particularly those whose extended service contracts had lapsed.

The recent payment, the government said, is aimed at clearing outstanding entitlements and ensuring full compliance with the adjusted minimum wage structure.
