ABDUCTED KWARA MONARCH RELEASED AFTER 25 DAYS IN CAPTIVITY

The Ojibara of Bayagan Ile in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Kamilu Salami, who was abducted by bandits about 25 days ago has regained his freedom.

The monarch, who was kidnapped on his farm, was released on Tuesday night, according to community sources.

Residents of Bayagan Ile have expressed joy and relief following the safe return of their traditional ruler, with jubilant crowds reportedly thronging the palace to welcome him home.

Confirming the development, spokesperson of the community, Mr. Ayinla Lawal, said the monarch was released after a ransom was paid in two instalments by members of the community.

Mr. Lawal explained that the amount demanded by the bandits was raised solely through community contributions, noting that neither the local nor state government intervened during the ordeal. He added that the elders have appealed that the ransom amount should not be disclosed.

He thanked God for the safe return of the monarch, appreciated the media, community members for their support throughout the period.

It will be recalled that the bandits had earlier rejected an initial ransom payment and demanded additional money before releasing the monarch.

Mr. Lawal disclosed that additional vigilantes and local hunters have now been recruited to strengthen security in the community, expressing optimism that displaced residents would soon return.

The monarch was taken to Ilorin, the state capital on Wednesday morning for medical attention.

Also confirming the development, the monarch’s younger brother, Aliyu, who reportedly delivered the ransom, said the bandits operated from a remote location, kept their identities concealed.

He expressed gratitude to God for his safety and for the successful release of the traditional ruler.

Efforts to speak with the monarch were unsuccessful, as he was said to be resting under medical observation.
