The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who reportedly died after consuming a meal prepared by her.

The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00p.m. in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Confirming the incident in a statement made available to journalists in Dutse on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased ate his lunch at home before suddenly falling seriously ill.

According to the police spokesperson, the man was rushed to a hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Divisional Police Headquarters commenced an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect.

SP Adam disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.

“The suspect confessed of poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison, claimed that she sent her cousin to purchase the poison used in committing the act,” the PPRO said.

According to the police, the suspect further alleged that she had been forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed influenced her actions.

SP Adam stated that the Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Dutse, for a thorough and discreet investigation.

He added that upon completion of the investigation, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the police command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, advising them to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes.

The command cautioned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often result in irreversible consequences.

“The police will ensure that justice is served in this case,” the PPRO said, adding that the suspect is currently in police custody awaiting trial.
