Members of the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DBAN) staged a protest at the Lagos State office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday, opposing the ban on the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets.
The protesters were joined by members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), carrying placards and singing solidarity songs to draw attention to their grievances.
Some of the placards bore slogans such as:
• “Stop destroying local manufacturers”
• “N2 trillion investment deserves protection”
• “5.5 million Nigerians cannot be pushed to the streets”
• “The Renewed Hope Agenda must work for all Nigerians”
The demonstrators called on regulators to reconsider the ban, citing concerns over potential job losses and the impact on local investment.
As of the time of filing this report, the distillers had not issued a formal statement to the press.
