POLICE LAUNCH INVESTIGATION AS STUDENT DIES IN SUSPECTED SUICIDE

A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, Kelvin Danlami, has died in what authorities have described as a suspected suicide.

Kelvin, a student of the Department of Computer Science, was found lifeless in his off-campus residence on Monday, triggering shock and grief within the university community.

Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said it received a report in the early hours of January 19, 2026, about the death of the student. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, the victim was discovered by a neighbour, after which he was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.

Abiodun said police operatives from the Lapai Division visited the scene, carried out a preliminary investigation, and contacted the family of the deceased, adding that further investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The incident has drawn emotional reactions from fellow students, the Students’ Union Government of the institution.

A student, Musa Abdullahi, in a condolence message, cautioned young people against risky behaviours associated with the pursuit of quick money, urging students to seek help when faced with financial or emotional pressure.

Similarly, the General Secretary of the IBBU Students’ Union Government, Aliyu Abubakar, described the death as a tragic and painful loss to the university community.

On behalf of the SUG, he extended condolences to the family, friends, and the Department of Computer Science, praying for strength and comfort for those affected.
