Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen has rejected claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Greenland is vital to the United States and “covered” with Chinese ships.
Rasmussen dismissed the assertion, saying the U.S. was welcome to invest in Greenland, that the island is capable of managing its own affairs. The Danish government reiterated that Greenland’s sovereignty must be respected.
The remarks come amid renewed interest from Trump in acquiring Greenland, part of Denmark, which has consistently stated it does not wish to become part of the United States. The island’s strategic location and mineral wealth have made it a focus of global attention.
The Danish government has requested urgent discussions with U.S. officials, including Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to clarify the situation.
European and Canadian leaders have also reaffirmed that Greenland belongs to its people, should decide its own future.
