Former U.S. Vice President, Kamala Harris has described the January 6, 2021, attack on the United States Capitol as one of the darkest moments in American democratic history, warning that the threats exposed that day have not disappeared.
In a statement posted on her official Facebook page to mark five years since the attack, Harris said an armed mob, driven by lies and incitement from President Donald Trump, attempted to overturn a free, fair election through violence and intimidation.
She accused Trump of deepening the damage by later pardoning those involved in the insurrection, describing the move as a betrayal of the country and its democratic values.
January 6, 2021, Harris said, revealed how fragile democracy can be, underscored the danger of political leaders who fuel hatred and falsehoods for personal gain. She warned that Americans must not remain silent as Trump and his allies continue to sow fear, weaken democratic institutions, enrich themselves at the expense of working people, undermine the nation’s global standing.
The former Vice President also reflected on her role in certifying the 2025 presidential election, calling it one of the most challenging moments of her career. She stressed that despite the pressure and political climate, she never considered taking any action other than upholding the will of the voters.
According to Harris, the American people had spoken clearly through the ballot, and in a democracy, their decision must always be respected.
She reaffirmed that political power does not belong to individuals, mobs, or strongmen, but to the people, adding that safeguarding democracy requires constant effort, courage, and accountability.
