REPS SEEK RE-GAZETTING OF TAX LAWS OVER ALLEGED ALTERATIONS

Following allegations of discrepancies between the versions of tax reform laws recently passed by the National Assembly, those published by the Federal Government; the House of Representatives has ordered the re-gazetting of the law.

This move, the House said was necessary to safeguard legislative integrity, uphold due process, and restore public confidence in the country’s lawmaking process.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson of the House, Akin Rotimi, in the wake of concerns from stakeholders over alleged alterations in the final versions of the tax laws made public after presidential assent.

It stressed that any discrepancy between a bill duly passed by the legislature, and the version eventually gazetted undermines democratic accountability and the sanctity of the legislative process.

Mr Rotimi explained that the re-gazetting directive was aimed at ensuring the laws accurately reflect the exact texts debated, amended, approved by both chambers of the National Assembly.
He added that the House would not tolerate any action, whether administrative or otherwise that compromises the authority of the parliament or distorts legislative intent.

The controversy over the tax reform laws has generated significant debate among policy analysts, labour unions, civil society organisations, with critics warning that inconsistencies in legal texts could create uncertainty for taxpayers, businesses, enforcement agencies.

In its response, the House noted that tax legislation, given its far-reaching economic, social implications, must meet the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, procedural compliance.

“The House of Representatives reaffirms its unwavering commitment to due process, constitutionalism, legislative transparency.

“The House will continue to exercise its oversight responsibilities to ensure all enacted laws are implemented strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions and legislative resolutions,” the statement said.

The lawmakers further assured Nigerians that appropriate engagement with relevant executive agencies would be undertaken to address the issue promptly and prevent a recurrence. The House did not specify the nature or extent of the alleged discrepancies.

Also, it emphasized that re-gazetting the affected Acts would eliminate ambiguities, align the public records with the authentic legislative documents.
