An explosion on Tuesday evening at a mosque within Gamboru Market, Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC), Borno State, has left four persons dead and 32 others injured.
The incident occurred at about 6:00p.m. on December 24, 2025, while Muslim worshippers were observing evening prayers.
According to a statement by Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), preliminary investigations indicate that the blast was caused by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bomber who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians instantly at the scene.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, other security agencies, the Borno State Government, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), swiftly responded to the incident.
The affected area was secured, cordoned off to prevent further casualties.
Victims were evacuated to the General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.
The military disclosed that while 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries, two of the injured later died in hospital.
Two others are in critical condition, while the remaining victims are reported to be stable, receiving appropriate medical care.
Following the attack, security agencies have intensified surveillance and patrols within Maiduguri and its environs to forestall further incidents.
Residents have been advised to remain calm but vigilant, especially during the yuletide season.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the North-East.
