The Labour Party (LP) has urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country, despite prevailing economic, security challenges; saying the Christmas season should inspire hope, unity, collective resolve for national renewal.
In a Christmas message, the Interim National Chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, called on citizens to draw lessons from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, emphasizing that Christmas goes beyond festivity and should encourage love, sacrifice, and service to humanity.
Acknowledging the widespread hardship confronting citizens, Usman urged Nigerians not to give in to hopelessness, describing the country as the only home its people have.
“While I acknowledge that this is an era of anomie for our nation, I urge our beleaguered citizens not to lose hope in Nigeria. This country remains the only home we have,” she said.
She called for resilience, courage, collective determination in the continued struggle for justice, equity, and good governance, ideals the Labour Party has consistently promoted since the 2023 general elections.
The former finance minister said the season provides an opportunity for sober reflection, particularly amid poverty, insecurity, and other social vices, which she attributed to poor leadership.
“Christmas is not merely a festive occasion; it is a reminder of love, sacrifice, humility, and service to humanity,” she added.
Usman also enjoined Nigerians to show compassion and empathy towards one another, arguing that unity and love remain critical to confronting despair and healing divisions across the country.
She challenged political leaders and public office holders to live up to the values associated with the birth of Christ, urging them to prioritise selfless service and the welfare of the people.
“Our celebration of Christmas should not be symbolic alone, but must be reflected in sincere actions, selfless leadership, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people,” she said.
