Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement the Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local government councils across the country.

Atiku made the call in a statement posted on his official X handle, Wednesday, expressing concern that nearly two years after the judgment, the directive is yet to be enforced.

He stressed that Supreme Court judgments are final and binding, warning that continued delay amounts to a breach of the Constitution and a violation of the presidential oath of office.

According to the former Vice President, denying local governments financial autonomy weakens grassroots governance and development, noting that it hurts communities rather than state governors.

Atiku said local governments are the closest tier of government to the people, adding that withholding their funds cripples development and deepens poverty at the grassroots.

He called on President Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to immediately enforce the judgment, describing any delay as a failure of leadership.
