A fire that broke out in a residential building in Shantou, Guangdong province, southern China, has claimed the lives of 12 people, state media reported.

The blaze erupted around 9:20pm on Tuesday, December 9 in a four-storey building and was extinguished just after 10:00pm, according to the Chaonan District Fire and Rescue Team.

The structure, described as a self-built reinforced concrete building, had an affected area of 150 square metres (1,600 square feet).

Initial, reports had said that eight people were killed and four others were injured and taken to the hospital.

State media outlet Xinhua later confirmed the death toll had risen to 12.

The fire follows a major blaze in Hong Kong last month, which engulfed several high-rise residential towers and killed 160 people.

In response, China has launched a campaign, targeting fire hazards in high-rising buildings.

Investigations into the cause of the Shantou fire and the handling of its aftermath are ongoing.
