A mother and her child have died after a container-laden truck overturned in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State, trapping both victims beneath the fallen container.

The fatal accident occurred at Otto Wharf, along the busy Apapa-bound corridor, during the weekend.

According to a report attributed to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the truck was conveying a 40-foot container when it reportedly developed a mechanical fault and fell sideways.

The mother and child were caught beneath the container and were subsequently confirmed dead.

Emergency responders from LASEMA, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene.

The agencies worked to manage the emergency, secure the affected area and coordinate the recovery operation.

LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team temporarily withdrew from the immediate scene because of safety concerns arising from the situation in the surrounding area.

The incident caused concern along the Mile 2 corridor, a major route frequently used by articulated vehicles transporting containers and other goods to and from Lagos ports.

In a separate account of the accident, LASTMA was reported to have deployed rescue and recovery personnel to evacuate the victims and remove the obstruction.

Traffic management measures were introduced to reduce congestion and protect other road users during the operation.

Police officers also reportedly assisted in securing the scene while recovery efforts continued.

The identities of the deceased had not been publicly established in the reports reviewed.

The circumstances that caused the truck to overturn remain subject to further investigation, although the emergency agency’s preliminary account referred to a mechanical fault.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki called for greater attention to the safety of heavy-duty vehicles operating on Lagos roads.

He urged transport operators to conduct regular mechanical inspections, secure their cargo properly and comply with road safety regulations.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by container-laden trucks, particularly where mechanical defects, unsecured loads or unsafe driving practices are involved.

Heavy-duty vehicles remain an important part of commercial transportation in Lagos, but accidents involving them can have severe consequences for pedestrians, motorists and nearby communities.

The authorities have continued to emphasise the need for preventive maintenance, effective traffic enforcement and prompt emergency response.

Further investigation is expected to clarify the immediate cause of the accident and establish whether any safety regulations were breached.
