The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) has formally decorated Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as a Fellow of the institute in recognition of his administration’s contributions to human capital development and professional training in the public service.

The decoration took place at the State House, Marina, Lagos, during a visit by a CIPM delegation led by the institute’s President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Ahmed Gobir.

According to a statement issued by the institute, the Fellowship was conferred on Sanwo-Olu at its 58th International Conference and Exhibition, where Lagos State recorded the largest delegation, with more than 500 civil servants participating.

Speaking during the visit, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of public servants through continuous training, professional certification and institutional partnerships.

The governor said investment in human capital remained central to improving governance, institutional efficiency and public service delivery across the state.

He pledged to ensure that Lagos State’s participation in CIPM programmes would continue beyond his administration, disclosing that the commitment would be included in his handover notes to the incoming government.

Sanwo-Olu described professional development as an important component of public sector reform, stressing that civil servants must continually acquire relevant knowledge and competencies to respond effectively to changing administrative demands.

He commended CIPM for its contributions to human resource management in Nigeria, particularly through professional training, certification and knowledge-sharing programmes.

The governor also expressed satisfaction with the increasing participation of Lagos State civil servants in the institute’s activities.

He praised the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, and other senior civil service officials for encouraging professionalism, capacity building and continuous learning within the state workforce.

Commenting on his admission into the institute’s Fellowship, Sanwo-Olu said the selection process reflected the professional standards maintained by CIPM.

Earlier, Gobir congratulated the governor and explained that the Fellowship recognised individuals who had satisfied the institute’s established professional and leadership requirements.

He particularly commended the Lagos State Government for sponsoring more than 500 civil servants to participate in the institute’s 58th International Conference and Exhibition.

According to him, the level of participation demonstrated the administration’s emphasis on developing the skills and professional competence of its workforce.

Gobir said sustained investment in employee development could strengthen institutional performance, improve administrative processes and support more effective delivery of government services.

He also acknowledged the role of the Lagos State civil service leadership in promoting professional standards and encouraging employees to pursue recognised qualifications.

The institute expressed its willingness to sustain collaboration with the Lagos State Government in workforce development, human resource management and professional capacity building.

Although Sanwo-Olu pledged continuity beyond his tenure, the statement did not provide specific funding commitments or measurable targets for future participation in CIPM programmes.

The recognition comes as the Lagos State Government continues to emphasise training and professional development as part of its public service improvement agenda.
