Iranian authorities have executed a man convicted of killing a police officer during a confrontation involving suspected fuel smugglers in the southern city of Bandar Abbas in 2022.
Iran’s judiciary announced that the death sentence against the convict, identified as Danial, had been carried out following the conclusion of judicial proceedings.
According to the judiciary’s Mizan Online publication, the execution followed a conviction for the intentional killing of Reza Ehterami, a third lieutenant attached to Iran’s law enforcement emergency unit.

Local prosecutor Aref Akbari said the officer died after being struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by the defendant during clashes between security personnel and suspected fuel smugglers.
Akbari stated that the case underwent investigation and judicial proceedings before Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the conviction and death sentence.
The judiciary did not provide further details about the execution or disclose whether any additional defendants were prosecuted in connection with the incident.
The execution comes amid continuing international scrutiny of Iran’s application of capital punishment.
Iran retains the death penalty for several criminal offences, including murder, and remains among the countries carrying out the highest numbers of executions globally.

Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have repeatedly raised concerns about the country’s use of capital punishment, judicial safeguards and the treatment of defendants facing death sentences.
Iranian authorities, however, maintain that capital punishment is applied under the country’s criminal laws following judicial proceedings.
The latest execution adds to the ongoing debate over Iran’s criminal justice system and its continued enforcement of the death penalty.
