President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, praising their resilience and calling for greater unity and commitment to the nation.

Akpabio made the call in a goodwill message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, ahead of Thursday’s Independence Day celebration.

The Senate President described Nigeria as “our destiny, our duty, our future” and paid tribute to the country’s founding fathers and generations whose sacrifices contributed to its independence and development.

He acknowledged that Nigeria’s journey since independence had been marked by periods of progress as well as significant challenges, but said Nigerians had continued to demonstrate resilience, perseverance and belief in the country.

Akpabio said the Nigerian spirit could be seen in the contributions of farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs and young people working daily to improve their communities and the country.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s cultural diversity, enterprise and the achievements of Nigerians around the world as expressions of the country’s strength.

The Senate President urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence across cultural, religious and other differences.

He said Nigeria’s diversity should serve as a source of strength rather than division, stressing that preserving peace was essential to achieving the country’s aspirations.

Akpabio also paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, particularly personnel who lost their lives while serving the country.

He expressed appreciation to their families and acknowledged the sacrifices made in protecting Nigeria’s freedom and unity.

The Senate President further said the National Assembly would continue to support efforts by President Bola Tinubu’s administration aimed at strengthening the country and improving the lives of Nigerians.

He urged citizens to approach the anniversary with renewed commitment to integrity, compassion, national service and collective responsibility.

Akpabio said every generation had a responsibility to preserve the gains of independence and contribute towards building the country’s future.

He wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and prayed for continued peace, unity and progress across the country.
