Former Senator Shehu Sani has described Nigeria as a resilient nation that has survived numerous challenges and crises since gaining independence in 1960.

Sani made the remarks on Thursday while joining Nigerians in commemorating the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The former Kaduna Central senator acknowledged that Nigeria may not have fulfilled all the expectations of those who believed in its potential but maintained that the country had repeatedly demonstrated its ability to withstand difficult periods.

“No nation exists without challenges. Some nations could not survive theirs. Ours has survived the phases of its storms and turbulence,” Sani said.

He noted that Nigeria’s journey since independence had been characterised by periods of difficulty but said the country had continued to endure despite the challenges confronting it.

According to Sani, Nigeria has also continued to defy pessimistic predictions about its future.

“Our country may not have met the expectations of those who wished her well or believed in her, but it also continuously disappoints the pessimistic predictions of the prophets of doom,” he said.

Sani described Nigeria as a “resilient nation with nine lives” and congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and is marking 66 years of independence on Thursday.
