Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 3-0 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying encounter at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro on Tuesday.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, giving Guinea-Bissau a 1-0 advantage that they maintained until half-time.
Nigeria enjoyed more possession and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but the Super Eagles were unable to convert their opportunities.
Mama Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau’s advantage in the 66th minute before Álvaro Djaló added a third goal in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to complete the victory.
Nigeria finished the match with 55.3 per cent possession compared with Guinea-Bissau’s 44.7 per cent. Both teams registered 12 attempts, with Guinea-Bissau recording seven shots on target and Nigeria five.
The Super Eagles also completed more passes, recording 370 to Guinea-Bissau’s 303, and had 22 touches inside the opposition penalty area compared with 13 for the hosts.
Despite those figures, Guinea-Bissau proved more clinical in front of goal and kept Nigeria from scoring.
The result followed opening victories for both countries in Group L. Nigeria had defeated Madagascar 2-1, while Guinea-Bissau opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tanzania.
Tuesday’s result gives Guinea-Bissau an important advantage in the race for qualification from the group, while Nigeria will look to recover in their remaining fixtures.
