CNN reporters have been barred from travelling with United States President Donald Trump on his trip to Tennessee on Saturday, extending an ongoing dispute between the White House and several major news organisations.
CNN had been scheduled to provide television pool coverage for the trip, but a White House schedule released on Friday did not include the network in the rotation. Instead, Lindell TV was listed to provide secondary television coverage.
The development comes days after a federal judge temporarily blocked the White House from excluding CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds. The three organisations had challenged the restrictions in court, arguing that they violated constitutional protections.
The dispute began after Trump announced that the three organisations would be barred from the White House over coverage he described as “fake news.” Their press credentials were subsequently deactivated.
The restrictions also disrupted the longstanding television pool system, under which major networks rotate responsibility for providing footage of presidential events to other broadcasters when space is limited.
ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC subsequently suspended television pool coverage after CNN was prevented from carrying out its scheduled duties, leaving some presidential events without the usual network pool camera.
CNN said this week that its journalists continued to face restrictions on some coverage even after the court temporarily restored their White House access.
The legal dispute over the White House restrictions remains ongoing.
