Cross River State Government has cancelled the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, citing rising security concerns across the country.

Governor Bassey Otu announced the decision in a statement issued on his X handle on Thursday, explaining that the move followed a careful assessment of the national security climate.

He said the safety of athletes, participants, visitors, and residents remained the top priority of his administration.

“After a careful review of the prevailing security situation across the country, I have directed the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon,” the governor wrote. “This decision was not an easy one, especially considering the passion, planning, and anticipation that this event inspires every year. However, the safety of our people, our athletes, and our visitors must always come first.”

Otu apologised to organisers, partners, and registered participants affected by the decision, assuring them that future editions of the event would return “stronger, safer, and better organised” with the full backing of the state government.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to promoting Cross River as a destination of peace, beauty, and excellence, the governor noted that difficult but responsible decisions were necessary to preserve lives while continuing to spotlight the state globally.

The marathon, now in its second edition, was scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the picturesque Agbokim Waterfalls in Etung Local Government Area.

Designed as a 42km eco-tourism race, it was expected to attract athletes, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from within and outside the country.

The cancellation comes amid rising insecurity nationwide.

Recent incidents include the violent attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, where gunmen killed at least two worshippers and abducted the pastor and several congregants during an evening service on November 18.
